Last week, Grace Bartel, Claire Bremner, Mary Persia and Sarah Brill participated in the GHD Girls in STEM week long work experience program, held in Wodonga.
GHD is a global professional services company operating in the global markets of water, energy and resources, environment, property and buildings, and transportation. GHD’s STEM Pathways Program was launched in 2017 and in partnership with North East Water was held in Ӱ̳for the first time last year. The aim of the program is to encourage female students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Grace, Claire, Mary and Sarah were able to explore opportunities in STEM fields through workshops, seminars, and real-world challenges, introducing them to cutting-edge technologies and sustainable solutions. They visited two VR sites and evaluated the use of Artificial Intelligence in finding solutions for the issues identified. They developed practical skills in science and engineering while also gaining insight into the challenges faced by regional communities like Wodonga. They also explored how STEM innovations, particularly in environmental sustainability and infrastructure, can positively impact their local community.
On the last day of the program, Grace, Claire and Mary presented what they had learned from their experiences to an audience at the North East Water wastewater treatment plant. This final presentation allowed them to showcase their knowledge and participate in a ‘question-answer’ session with their ‘expert’ audience. The WSSC students impressed the facilitators of this excellent experience.
